Corbett National Park situated in the foothills of the Himalayas, in the newly created state of Uttarakhand is haven for wildlife lovers in India.

Jim Corbett National Park was founded in 1936, as the Hailey National Park. Later it has changed to Jim Corbett National Park in the honours of fabled hunter-Jim Corbett is best known for his book "The Man-Eaters of Kumaon", and was greatly revered by local people for shooting tigers that had developed a liking for human flesh. Corbett is famous for its wide variety of wildlife and its beautiful location in the foothill of Himalaya by the Ramganga River. With the recent inclusion of the Sonanadi wildlife sanctuary to the west, Corbett has grown form 520 to 1318 sq km.

Jim Corbett National Park is one of the majestic place for the Nature and Wildlife lovers. In this park Elephant Safari and Jeep Safari are favourite activity. This park is situated on the bank of Ramganga River. Forests of Sal are very famous for this area. In this park more than 600 birds, 50 mammals, and 25 reptile. This is also very famous for the Elephants and Indian Tigers.

More commonly seen wildlife includes the wild elephant, langur monkey(black face, long tail), rhesus macaque, peacock, and several type of deer including chital(spotted deer), sambars, hog deer and barking deer. There are also crocodiles, the odd-looking gavial or gharial, monitor lizards, wild boars and jackals. Leopards (referred to as panthers in India) are occasionally seen.

Corbett is also a bird-watcher's paradise, and since the creation of the Kalagarah Dam on the Ramganga River, large numbers of waterfowl have been attracted here.

Wildlife in Corbett National Park Apart from the Bengal Tigers and Elephants, the wildlife in the Corbett National Park includes Himalayan Palm Civet, Indian Gray Mongoose, Common Otter, Blacknaped Hare and Porcupine. Besides the huge herds of elephants, one can also discover the two varieties of crocodiles - Gharial and Mugger - on the banks of Ramganga River. The leopards are mostly found in the hilly terrains of the National Park contrary to the sloth bear, which is found in the lower regions of the park. The national park also consists of the cat family like Leopard Cat, Jungle Cat and Fishing Cat. The Dole or Wild Dog and Jackal are found in the southern parts of the national park. The Langur and Rhesus Monkeys are also quite common in the Corbett national park.

Special Attractions in Corbett National Park
Ramnagar : Famous as the fishing camp in the Corbett National Park, this small town inhabited in the Terai region amidst the dense forest cover, is the main centre of administration near the national park. At Lohachaur, 15-kms away from the River Kosi, the sport buffs have a wide scope of angling and fishing Mahseer. One can book a fishing trip too.

Wildlife Viewing : The animals like Chital, Sambhar, and various other Deer species can be seen and the dense jungle be explored in the two-hour elephant safari. Jeep Safari is the most convenient mode of exploring the Corbett national park, and can be started from Ramnagar. One should always remember to bring binoculars, keep silence and not wear the bright colours or apply strong perfumes.
